Flagship Project: Dunsany Castle & Nature Reserve, Ireland
Situated approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Dublin, the Dunsany Estate boasts a rich history dating back to the 11th century. Covering 1600 acres (650 hectares), the estate encompasses diverse landscapes. Around 750 acres (300 hectares) are dedicated to rewilding efforts as a reserve. Additionally, there are 550 acres (220 hectares) of forests and various springs and streams meandering through marshy zones. Abundant wildlife thrives here, ranging from foxes, badgers, and otters to owls, red deer, and various birds of prey.
Notably, in 2014, all animal agriculture ceased, allowing fields and forests that once held farm animals to undergo rewilding. This innovative conservation approach aims to rejuvenate natural ecosystem processes by providing space for nature to flourish and function. It often involves reintroducing vital native species, like large herbivores and carnivores, essential for ecosystem dynamics.
